Minister Promises Support to Install Solar Panels and Upgrade Services at Madhupur Health Complex
Although the Madhupur Upazila Health Complex in Tangail was upgraded from a 50-bed facility to a 100-bed hospital, full-scale healthcare services have yet to be launched due to shortages of manpower and budget allocations. However, local Member of Parliament and Minister of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology and Science and Technology, Faqir Mahbub Anam, has assured that initiatives will be taken to address the hospital’s longstanding challenges.
The minister visited the Madhupur Upazila Health Complex on Friday afternoon, the day after Eid. Among those present during the visit were Mirza Md. Zubayer Hossain, Advocate Shamsuzzaman Suruj, Jakir Hossain Sarkar, Nasir Uddin and other local leaders.
Upon arriving at the hospital campus, the minister was welcomed with flowers by Dr. Saidur Rahman. Also present were Officer-in-Charge AKM Fazlul Haque, BNP leader Zainal Abedin Khan Bablu, Upazila BNP Vice President M Ratan Haider, Residential Medical Officer Dr. Sajib Kanti Pal, along with doctors, nurses, officials and employees of the hospital.
During the visit, the minister spoke with admitted patients and inquired about the quality of healthcare services. He also spent time with child patients. Later, he participated in an exchange meeting at the seminar room on the second floor of the hospital’s new building.
At the meeting, hospital authorities informed the minister that patients from Madhupur, Dhanbari and Gopalpur, as well as from Muktagacha in Mymensingh, Sarishabari in Jamalpur and various parts of Ghatail, regularly seek treatment at the facility. As a result, the hospital faces a heavy patient load every day.
Hospital officials further explained that although the facility was upgraded from 50 beds to 100 beds in 2020, the necessary revenue-funded staffing positions have not yet been created. In addition, insufficient allocations for medical and surgical requisites (MSR), electricity bills, municipal taxes and land development taxes have forced the hospital to operate a 100-bed service with limited personnel. This has placed significant pressure on doctors, nurses and support staff.
To ensure full-scale operation of the upgraded hospital, authorities requested the construction of a new storage building, boundary wall, solar power system, submersible motor and water supply line, sewage and waste management facilities, dormitories for doctors and residential quarters for employees. They also emphasized the need for additional medical equipment and furniture.
Despite these limitations, Madhupur Upazila Health Complex has been recognized multiple times as one of the country's best-performing hospitals under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) HSS scoring system. According to hospital officials, adequate staffing and infrastructure improvements could transform it into a major referral hospital serving several surrounding upazilas.
Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr. Saidur Rahman said that Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam had sent a DO letter to the Health Minister on May 21, 2026, outlining the hospital’s key problems and requirements. He added that the minister is personally monitoring the matter and has pledged to pursue swift implementation of the proposed solutions.
During the inspection, the minister also pledged to install solar panels to address the hospital’s electricity shortages. Until the solar system is operational, he promised to personally bear the cost of the hospital’s generator fuel and electricity expenses.
