The global debate over intellectual property rights and copyright infringement in the artificial intelligence (AI) industry has intensified further. This time, renowned American news network CNN has filed a massive copyright infringement lawsuit against popular AI-powered search platform Perplexity AI. CNN alleges that the company illegally copied and used more than 17,000 pieces of its original news content and journalistic materials for commercial purposes.

According to the lawsuit filed on Thursday, CNN claims that the billion-dollar AI startup unlawfully scraped and copied content from its website to power its AI services. The network further alleges that even premium CNN articles, which are available only to paying subscribers, were reproduced and displayed to Perplexity’s own paid users without authorization.

Allegations of Damaging CNN’s Brand Through Misinformation

Beyond content theft, CNN has also accused Perplexity of trademark infringement. According to the lawsuit, Perplexity’s AI tools have at times generated inaccurate or entirely fabricated information and presented it as if it originated from CNN reporting. The network argues that such actions risk damaging its reputation and brand value as a trusted global news organization.

In a statement, a CNN spokesperson said that a company valued at tens of billions of dollars should not be allowed to build its business by exploiting original journalism created by others. The spokesperson emphasized that high-quality reporting requires significant financial investment, expertise, and risk, and that commercial entities using such content must compensate the organizations that produce it.

Licensing Talks Failed, Dispute Escalated

Court documents reveal that CNN and Perplexity had previously discussed a potential commercial licensing agreement. Under the proposed arrangement, Perplexity would have obtained legal access to CNN’s premium content for its subscribers. However, negotiations eventually collapsed. CNN claims that despite repeated legal warnings and cease-and-desist notices, Perplexity continued using CNN’s content and branding within its AI products.

Responding to the lawsuit, Perplexity Chief Communications Officer Jesse Dwyer defended the company’s position, stating, “You can’t copyright facts.”

Growing Legal Battle Between AI Firms and Media Companies

CNN is far from the first organization to take legal action against Perplexity. Several major publishers and content owners have already filed lawsuits against the company, including The New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Merriam-Webster, Encyclopaedia Britannica, Nikkei and Reddit. Many of these organizations accuse Perplexity of scraping copyrighted content and reproducing it through AI-generated responses without permission.

Industry analysts believe the growing confrontation between AI companies and media organizations could play a historic role in defining the future boundaries of AI development, copyright law, content licensing, and digital journalism.
