Rockstar Confirms Third-Party Data Breach Amid Ransom Threat
Apr 12, 2026 21:58

Rockstar Games has confirmed a “third-party data breach” involving its cloud servers. A hacking group named ShinyHunters has issued an ultimatum, warning the company to pay a ransom by April 14 or face the public release of sensitive data.

How the Hack Occurred
According to reports, ShinyHunters infiltrated Rockstar’s cloud servers. In a post on their website, the group delivered a final message—“pay or leak.” They have not disclosed the exact nature of the data they accessed but claimed that its release could create several “digital problems” for the company.

Rockstar’s Response
Confirming the incident to Kotaku, Rockstar Games stated, “Due to a third-party data breach, some non-critical information of the company has been accessed. This incident will not have any impact on our organization or players.” The company added that sensitive materials such as game development tools or core source code have not been compromised.

A Repeat of History?
This is not the first such incident for Rockstar. In 2022, the Lapsus$ group leaked more than 90 videos and source code related to the upcoming game Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6). In that case, an 18-year-old hacker was sentenced by a UK court to indefinite hospitalization.

The ShinyHunters group is not new to such activities, having previously been linked to data breaches involving major companies like Microsoft, Google, and Ticketmaster.

The incident may also raise concerns about Rockstar’s financial posture and cybersecurity preparedness. It remains to be seen what decision the company takes by April 14 and whether the hackers will follow through on their threat.
