Ending long-standing user anticipation, Meta’s microblogging platform Threads has finally launched messaging functionality for its desktop or web version. In an announcement on Tuesday, the company said users can now conduct one-to-one and group chats directly from their computers. As a result, Threads’ web experience has now reached a level comparable to X and Bluesky.

Top user demand

Threads Head Connor Hayes said in a post that since the introduction of direct messaging on the mobile app in July 2025, web messaging had been the most requested feature among users. “A large portion of our most active users spend significant time on Threads via desktop. A communication app needs to be equally effective across all platforms,” he said.

What’s new in the web version

The web version of Threads now includes a dedicated ‘Message’ tab. From here, users can access their inbox, check new message requests, and perform searches. Additionally, new chats can be initiated directly from the desktop in the quickest possible time.

Remarkable growth in messaging

When Threads launched in 2023, it did not include any messaging functionality. However, Meta reported that since the beginning of this year, the volume of message exchanges has increased by 30 percent weekly. Currently, approximately 350 million (35 crore) direct messages are sent on Threads each week.

Live Chat: A competitive edge

To compete with rivals such as X and Bluesky, Threads has recently introduced a unique feature called ‘Live Chat’. It is designed for real-time conversations during specific cultural or sports events. The feature is currently being tested for basketball fans during the NBA Playoffs. Up to 150 users can actively send messages, images, and videos in a single live chat, while additional participants can join in ‘spectator’ mode.

According to technology analysts, features such as web messaging and live chat are transforming Threads from a simple posting platform into a comprehensive communication ecosystem.
