Trump, TikTok Talks Take Turn

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced progress in discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping regarding a TikTok agreement. The two leaders are expected to meet face-to-face in South Korea six weeks from now. The talks are also likely to cover trade, anti-drug measures, and the Ukraine conflict, according to Reuters.

While tensions eased slightly during a phone call three months ago, it remains unclear whether a final deal on TikTok has been reached. Trump claimed, “Xi has approved the agreement, and formal signing could take place soon.”

On the other hand, China’s statement made no reference to a formal TikTok deal. The country stated that it “respects the decisions of the relevant company and expects non-discriminatory treatment.”

The U.S. Congress had previously mandated the closure of TikTok in January if its American operations were not sold. Trump further noted that discussions also included positive engagement on trade, anti-drug measures, and the Ukraine war.

In a statement, ByteDance thanked both Trump and Xi, saying they would “find a solution to continue operations for U.S. users.”
