Globally popular game Minecraft has officially withdrawn support for virtual and mixed reality platforms as of today. The update was confirmed in the patch notes for the latest update of the game’s Bedrock Edition, according to a report by Engadget.

Mojang had earlier announced in October that VR support would end in March, although the actual discontinuation took effect in May—giving players some additional time to immerse themselves in the iconic block-built world.

Discontinuing VR support is rarely a casual decision. Despite Minecraft's massive global player base, Mojang’s move suggests that the number of users engaging with the game through VR may have been quite limited. While games like Beat Saber continue to keep virtual reality experiences alive and popular, the departure of a major title like Minecraft from the platform undeniably sends a negative signal to the VR gaming landscape.
