Campus Cricket: DU Final Sees Data-Driven Dominance of Institute of Social Welfare and Research
The Institute of Social Welfare and Research clinched their third consecutive title by defeating the Department of Sociology by 6 wickets in the final of the inter-department cricket tournament organized at University of Dhaka (DU).
In the final held on Wednesday, 15 April, Social Welfare won the toss and elected to bowl first. Riding on Ifti’s half-century, the Sociology team set a target of 164 runs at the end of 20 overs.
In the second innings, the Institute of Social Welfare and Research chased down the target, securing the championship with the loss of 6 wickets. For the team, Mahfizul Islam Robin scored the highest 75 runs, while Tanzim Farhan contributed the second-highest 62 runs.
Mahfizul Islam Robin of the Social Welfare cricket team was named Man of the Match, while the team’s captain Sifat Sadik Khan was awarded Man of the Tournament.
At the end of the match, prizes were distributed among the winners by President of the DU Cricket Committee Md. Mahbub Kayser; Director of the Institute of Social Welfare and Research Dr. Mahbuba Sultana; Chairman of the Department of Sociology Dr. Fatema Rezina Iqbal; and Student Adviser of the Institute of Social Welfare and Research Dr. Sheikh Touhidul Islam. Teachers of both the Institute of Social Welfare and Research and the Department of Sociology were also present.
Also present were Acting Director of the Physical Education Center S M Zakaria, Cricket In-charge Md. Shahadat Hossain, and others.
Additionally, former captain of the Social Welfare football and cricket teams and Joint General Secretary of the central committee of Chhatra Dal Md. Tarikul Islam Tarik; former captain of the Social Welfare cricket team Md. Rabiul Islam; M. Saifur Rahman; all-rounder of Social Welfare Sports Md. Toufiquruzzaman; former captain of the Social Welfare football team Md. Mamun Reza; along with current and former students of the Institute of Social Welfare and Research and students of the Department of Sociology were present.
At the end of the tournament, medals and trophies were distributed among the players. In addition, Student Adviser of the Institute of Social Welfare and Research, Professor Dr. Sheikh Touhidul Islam, provided financial rewards to players who, from the beginning of the tournament to the final, scored half-centuries, centuries, took three or more wickets, or demonstrated outstanding fielding performances for the Social Welfare team.
