XChat Rollout: Encrypted, Ad-Free Messaging App Set for April 17 Launch
X’s messaging app “XChat” is set to be launched. According to its listing on the Apple App Store, it will be available for download on 17 April. Although Elon Musk had spoken about a “new architecture” for X’s direct messaging (DM) feature around mid-2025, the feature is now arriving as a standalone app after a prolonged wait.
XChat is an end-to-end encrypted messaging application. It will allow direct messaging and voice calls between X users. The app will also offer options to edit and delete sent messages, including the ability to remove messages for the receiver as well.
With privacy in mind, users will be able to enable “disappearing messages,” allowing sensitive information to vanish within five minutes. Additionally, the app will include a screenshot-blocking feature. A single group can accommodate up to 481 members.
Most notably, XChat will be completely ad-free and will not allow any form of user tracking. X has committed to this in Apple’s privacy label disclosures.
Pre-orders for the app have already opened for iPhone and iPad users. After 17 April, it will be automatically downloaded to their devices. However, there is no information yet on when the Android version will be released.
It remains unclear whether XChat will fully replace X’s existing direct messaging system or operate alongside it. The app is expected to compete directly with platforms like WhatsApp and Signal.
