South Korea Plans to Acquire 10,000 GPUs to Stay Competitive in AI Race

South Korea is planning to acquire 10,000 high-performance graphics processing units (GPUs) this year to remain competitive in the global artificial intelligence (AI) race, according to a report by Reuters.
Acting President Choi Sang-mok stated that competition in the AI sector is no longer confined to companies but has evolved into an intense national innovation race. He further mentioned that the GPUs will be procured through a joint effort between the government and the private sector to accelerate the launch of the country’s national AI computing center.
Meanwhile, the United States has recently imposed new restrictions on the export of advanced AI technology. However, South Korea is among 18 countries exempt from these restrictions.
An official from the South Korean Ministry of Science and ICT stated that the specific GPUs to be purchased have not yet been determined. However, the budget, participating companies, and GPU models will be finalized by September.
Globally, Nvidia dominates the GPU market with nearly 80% market share, while Intel and AMD lag significantly behind. In contrast, OpenAI is reportedly developing its own chips to reduce dependence on Nvidia.
