Instagram ‘Instants’ Introduces Instant Image Innovation

Instagram has introduced a completely new experience for its users by launching a feature and dedicated app called “Instants,” capitalizing on the popularity of ephemeral or “disappearing” photos. The initiative, taken by Meta, aims to encourage users to share raw, unpolished, real-life moments with friends, moving away from the polished visuals typically seen in influencer-driven content.

The core concept of Instants revolves around capturing and sharing photos instantly. These images disappear automatically after being viewed once. However, users will have the option to store them in a personal archive for up to one year and later share them as a “wrap-up” story.

One of the most notable features of Instants is its simplicity. The platform does not allow filters or editing tools, nor does it permit uploading old photos from the gallery or camera roll. Users must take photos directly within the app, with the only addition being a brief caption. Much like Instagram’s early days, the emphasis is on sharing authentic, unfiltered moments.

The feature can be accessed via a new photo stack icon in the Direct Message (DM) section of the main Instagram app. In addition, a separate standalone app has been released on both Google Play Store and Apple App Store. According to Instagram authorities, the standalone app was developed to provide faster camera access, as the main app has become increasingly “bloated.”

Instants retains all standard Instagram security and privacy settings. For teenage users, parental supervision features will be automatically enabled. These include restrictions such as blocking screenshots or screen recordings and limiting app usage between 10:00 PM and 7:00 AM. Furthermore, if a teenager downloads the Instants app separately, a notification will be immediately sent to their guardian.

This is not the first time Instagram has introduced features inspired by other platforms. Previously, it launched “Stories” to compete with Snapchat and “Candid Stories” influenced by BeReal. However, with Instants emerging as a full-fledged standalone app, its acceptance among users remains to be seen.
