The National University has undertaken a major curriculum reform initiative to address future global challenges and develop students into skilled human resources. Breaking away from conventional higher education models, the university is introducing modern technical courses such as artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics, and computer programming at the undergraduate level.

This information was disclosed on Thursday, April 9, at the opening ceremony of a three-day curriculum development workshop held at the International Mother Language Institute in the capital. The event was attended by Education Minister Dr. A N M Ehsanul Hoque Milan as the chief guest. He stated that this curriculum reform initiative by the National University, with its emphasis on employment-oriented education, will serve as a historic milestone.

Under the new plan, Advanced ICT will be introduced in the second year of undergraduate studies, while subjects such as digital entrepreneurship, cybersecurity, and social business will be included in the third and fourth years. In addition, various “soft skills” courses will be emphasized to enhance students’ presentation and leadership abilities. The government’s a2i Programme and UNICEF Bangladesh are providing technical support for the implementation of this initiative.

While presiding over the program, Vice-Chancellor of the National University, Professor Dr. A S M Amanullah, stated that English and ICT have already been made compulsory to prepare students for the international job market. He also noted that plans are underway to introduce third-language education and establish world-class forensic laboratories. As approximately 70 percent of the country’s higher education students are affiliated with the National University, he expressed hope that this reform will play a significant role in reducing unemployment in the country.

Special guests at the event included Secondary and Higher Education Division Secretary Abdul Khaleque, a2i Project Director Md. Abdur Rafiq, and representatives from UNICEF Bangladesh. The event began with a one-minute silence in remembrance of the martyrs of the great Liberation War and the July Uprising.
