RAB Reinforces Readiness in Cyberworld for Peaceful Pahela Baishakh Celebrations

As Bangladesh prepares to celebrate Pahela Baishakh, the Bengali New Year, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has ramped up both physical and digital surveillance to ensure a peaceful observance of the festivities. RAB Director General A.K.M. Shahidul Rahman announced the comprehensive security measures in a press statement issued on Sunday, April 13.

"Pahela Baishakh is a significant occasion in our national life. As in previous years, we will celebrate it with enthusiasm in a joyous atmosphere. For this, RAB has taken extensive security measures across Dhaka and the rest of the country," Rahman stated.

He detailed that RAB patrols—including motorcycles, vehicles, checkpoints, observation towers, and intelligence units—have been deployed nationwide. A total of 224 pickup patrols and 122 motorcycle patrols will operate across the country. In addition, 2,449 RAB members, including 413 in plain clothes, will be deployed during the festivities.

"We have coordinated with other law enforcement agencies, cultural organizations, public representatives, and citizens to ensure smooth and safe celebrations," said Rahman.

He added that festivities in Dhaka have already commenced, with a band show scheduled at Suhrawardy Udyan on Sunday. On the main day, April 14, various events will take place across the city, including the central celebration at Ramna Batamul, the traditional Mongol Shobhajatra organized by Charukala (the Faculty of Fine Arts), daylong programs at Rabindra Sarobar, and events on Manik Avenue stretching into the evening.

Regarding possible security threats, Rahman cited the example of the recent Durga Puja celebrations, which took place smoothly under the current interim government, despite initial concerns. "There were questions and doubts, but the government assured the public, and law enforcement coordinated with the Puja organizers to make it a success," he said.

"Since then, events such as Victory Day, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, International Mother Language Day, Independence Day, Ramadan, and Eid have all been celebrated with proper security and joy. Compared to previous years, all these events were carried out in a more secure and festive manner. We hope to maintain the same standard during the New Year celebrations," he added.

On venue-specific security, Rahman noted, "We will have motorcycle and vehicle patrols on the roads. Venues will be swept for threats—we have already begun the process and will conduct a final sweep just before events begin. Our dog squads and bomb disposal teams are on standby. I am confident there will be no security lapses."

When asked about a recent incident at Charukala, where a fire was reported on an effigy symbolizing fascism, Rahman confirmed an investigation is underway. "Those responsible will face legal action. We are also examining whether there was any failure in our security arrangements. If any such shortcomings are identified, action will be taken accordingly," he concluded.
