ChatGPT Climbs Charts: Tops Global App Downloads in March 2025

OpenAI’s ChatGPT has emerged as the most downloaded non-gaming app worldwide in March 2025, according to a Reuters report.

Data from analytics firm Appfigures shows that ChatGPT reached 46 million downloads in March alone, marking a 28% increase from February. This surge propelled the AI chatbot ahead of major competitors such as Instagram and TikTok, securing its position at the top of the global app charts.

Several new features contributed to ChatGPT’s rise in popularity. Notably, the app saw significant advancements in image generation, including the ability to create pictures and memes in the style of Studio Ghibli, which quickly gained traction among users. Additional developments included relaxed content moderation policies and improvements to the app’s AI voice feature.

Appfigures reported that downloads of ChatGPT have increased by 148% over the past year. The company’s CEO, Ariel Michaeli, remarked, “People now think ‘ChatGPT’ when they hear ‘AI’.”

In the March rankings, Instagram took second place while TikTok secured third.
