Banalata Express Boosts OTT Buzz After Blockbuster Theatrical Run
After setting commercial records in cinemas, the much-discussed film Banalata Express has now emerged as a major attraction on digital platforms as well.
Based on a novel by renowned writer Humayun Ahmed and directed by Tanim Noor, the star-studded film was released on the OTT platform Hoichoi on May 24. Since its digital debut, it has generated fresh excitement among online audiences at a time when streaming platforms were reportedly experiencing a seasonal slowdown in viewership.
According to information provided by Hoichoi authorities, the film has driven a significant increase in subscriptions and watch time since its OTT release. While digital platforms typically experience a rise in audience engagement following Eid holidays, Banalata Express is said to have further accelerated that trend.
In recent days, the film's viewership and watch-time figures have reportedly surpassed previous platform expectations, with movie enthusiasts increasingly turning to smartphones and other digital devices to watch the blockbuster from home.
Controversy Adds to Public Curiosity
The growing online audience has also been linked to an unexpected incident that recently sparked discussion around the film.
Last week, a special screening of Banalata Express was organized by a local film society in Brahmanbaria. However, following objections from a section of local Qawmi students and concerns over maintaining law and order, the organizers ultimately postponed the screening.
Expressing disappointment over the development, director Tanim Noor criticized the obstruction of a film that had already received official censorship clearance. He described the situation as unfortunate and raised concerns about restrictions on legitimate public screenings.
Social Media Attention Fuels Interest
The cancellation of the Brahmanbaria screening quickly became a topic of discussion on social media, generating additional curiosity about the film.
Many viewers who had missed the opportunity to watch Banalata Express during its theatrical run are now reportedly turning to OTT platforms to see what the discussion is about. Although no official data confirms that the controversy itself is directly responsible for the surge in online viewership, industry observers note that the film has become one of the most talked-about entertainment titles in the country.
At present, Banalata Express appears to be dominating conversations across both digital and traditional entertainment spaces, reinforcing its status as one of the year's most prominent Bangladeshi film successes.
