A pedestrian was killed after a bearing pad from the metro rail fell onto him in the capital’s Farmgate area on Sunday afternoon.

The fatal accident occurred at around 12:20 pm on October 26 beneath the Farmgate Metro Rail Station.

Eyewitnesses said the victim was walking along the footpath when a bearing pad suddenly fell from above as the metro passed overhead, striking him on the head. He died instantly at the scene. The man’s identity has not yet been confirmed.

Police arrived at the scene shortly after the incident. Sub-Inspector Shahiduzzaman of Tejgaon Police Station said, “We were on duty nearby. Upon receiving the news, we rushed to the spot and found the man lying dead.”

Following the incident, metro rail operations have been temporarily suspended.

Earlier, on September 18, a spring dislodged from one of the four supporting springs of a metro line viaduct between Farmgate and Bijoy Sarani.

Bearing pads are special rubber components installed between piers and viaducts to absorb vibrations and distribute structural loads safely.
