Apple Advances AR Eyewear Ambitions to Challenge Meta–Ray-Ban Smart Glasses
Tech giant Apple is preparing to enter the smart glasses market in a bid to challenge the dominance of Meta and Ray-Ban. According to a report by Bloomberg, the company is currently testing four different styles of smart glasses, which are expected to compete directly with Meta’s second-generation smart eyewear.
Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman stated that Apple’s project has been internally codenamed “N50.” It has been learned that Apple is developing the glasses in four distinct designs, keeping user preferences and style in mind. These include a large rectangular frame similar to Ray-Ban Wayfarer, a slim frame like the one used by Apple CEO Tim Cook, a large round design, and a smaller round version. The glasses are expected to be available in three colors: black, ocean blue, and light brown.
Like Meta’s smart glasses, Apple’s device will feature capabilities for capturing photos and recording videos. However, Apple is placing particular emphasis on its proprietary ecosystem.
The device will be easily synchronized or connected with the iPhone, allowing users to access calls, notifications, music, and the voice assistant Siri directly through the glasses. The company may also introduce design variations by incorporating special lighting elements around the lenses.
According to the report, the official announcement of the smart glasses could come by the end of 2026 or early 2027. It is expected that the device will be unveiled alongside the advanced Siri features of iOS 27.
Currently, Meta maintains its market position by offering prescription lenses and custom fitting options in its smart glasses. However, experts believe that Apple’s new initiative could bring significant changes to the wearable technology market.
