Meta is set to introduce a username feature on its messaging platform, WhatsApp, allowing users to communicate with one another using a unique username instead of a phone number. Reports indicate that the feature has recently begun rolling out for a limited set of iOS and Android users.

According to feature tracker WABetaInfo, the rules for creating and managing usernames are as follows:

Length and Restrictions: Usernames must be between 3 and 35 characters. They cannot start with a quotation mark (") or end with domains such as .com, .in, .edu, or .net, to avoid confusion with website addresses.

Character Types: Each username must include at least one letter; usernames cannot consist solely of numbers or special characters. Underscores, lowercase letters, and periods are allowed.

Phone Number Privacy: Using a username ensures that other users cannot see your phone number, eliminating the need to share it when communicating with unknown contacts.

A significant aspect is that WhatsApp usernames can be linked across Meta platforms. This means users can use the same username on WhatsApp as they do on Instagram or Facebook. To enable this, users must link their accounts via the Accounts Center to verify ownership of the username.

Currently, the rollout is gradual and limited to a select number of Android and iOS users. Meta has not yet officially confirmed the rollout, though a broader release is expected later this year.

The ability to use usernames instead of phone numbers on WhatsApp represents a major step forward for users, providing enhanced privacy, protection from spam and unknown calls, and an additional layer of confidentiality.
