Tesla has announced the recall of its Powerwall 2 home batteries in Australia. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) reported that some of these batteries had caught fire, causing “minor property damage.” However, no injuries have been reported so far, according to TechCrunch.

The recalled batteries were manufactured in the United States between November 2020 and June 2022 and subsequently sold in Australia. Their cells were supplied by an undisclosed third party.

The Powerwall 2 is equipped with a 14-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery, typically paired with solar panels to store surplus electricity generated during the day. Customers can also link the batteries to a virtual power plant to support the grid, which extends the warranty to up to 15 years and helps reduce electricity bills.

Tesla stated that owners of the affected batteries will be notified via the Tesla app. To reduce fire risk, the company is discharging the batteries and will later replace them free of charge. The ACCC added that compensation could also be considered if necessary.
