Telecom Power Priority Plea: AMTOB Urges Uninterrupted Energy Supply for Network Stability
The Association of Mobile Telecom Operators of Bangladesh (AMTOB) has made an urgent appeal to the government to ensure priority-based fuel supply and uninterrupted electricity for telecom infrastructure. The organization warned that a prolonged energy crisis could disrupt telecommunications services nationwide and severely impact the digital economy.
AMTOB stated that, in the context of the global energy crisis and geopolitical instability, operators had already informed the government about potential risks. Although the government responded positively, full implementation of those directives has yet to be observed at the field level. The impact of fuel shortages has already begun to affect telecom operations in some areas.
Due to recent storms, power outages under the Rural Electrification Board (REB) have increased, and electricity restoration in many areas is being delayed. The situation is expected to become more complex during the upcoming monsoon season.
In this context, the telecom sector has called for a coordinated support framework. This includes ensuring uninterrupted fuel supply to critical network installations and BTS sites, allocating dedicated fuel for maintenance transportation, reducing load-shedding in key areas, and ensuring rapid power restoration following disasters.
Bangladesh’s telecom infrastructure comprises approximately 45,000 towers, multiple data centers, and network operation centers, providing services to millions of people across nearly all regions of the country. Continuous electricity is essential to keep these networks operational 24 hours a day.
The organization further noted that during power outages, telecom networks rely on diesel-powered generators. As a result, any disruption in fuel supply could pose a significant risk to the country’s overall communication system.
AMTOB believes that the telecommunications sector is a key driver of the national economy. Any disruption in uninterrupted connectivity would severely affect e-commerce, banking, mobile financial services, and other digital activities. Therefore, the organization has urged the government to take immediate steps to ensure continuous fuel and electricity supply to the telecom sector.
