Tech Tools to Tackle Misinformation: Minister Swapan
Newly appointed Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan believes that technology itself must be used to counter misinformation and the misuse of social media. He sought the cooperation of media professionals in this regard.
On February 18, Wednesday, before entering his office at the Secretariat, Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan made these remarks while responding to various questions from journalists.
He said the government is committed to ensuring a fear-free environment for the media in the country. During a courtesy meeting with journalists at the Secretariat on Wednesday, he reiterated this commitment.
The minister stated that on behalf of the new government, he, along with the state minister and others concerned, expresses gratitude to all individuals associated with the country’s media sector—journalists, policymakers, media entrepreneurs, and their families. According to him, during the recent political movement and prolonged struggle, the role of the media was no less significant than that of activists on the streets.
“The platforms of the media were themselves arenas of the movement. Just as we are evaluating and honoring other fellow fighters, the media will be accorded the same respect,” he said.
Zahir Uddin Swapan informed that a cabinet meeting will be held at 3:00 pm on Wednesday. Following the meeting, he will formally begin his official duties. He noted that the day’s interaction with journalists was primarily a courtesy exchange.
Regarding fear-free journalism, the minister said that as a political activist who has himself faced persecution, he understands the mental pressure caused by fear and intimidation. “It is not desirable for those working in a respected profession like journalism to remain under constant surveillance,” he said, adding that media freedom has been given importance in the Prime Minister’s plans. Therefore, a fear-free media environment will be established in the country.
