NEIR Misinfo Cleared: No Phone Shutdown for Next 90 Days
Reports claiming that the National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR) system will not be active on mobile phones for the next three months have been clarified as false. DC Masud had reportedly cited Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser, Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, in spreading the information.
Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb confirmed that the NEIR system is active, but for the next 90 days, no illegal or cloned mobile phones will be blocked. This temporary measure aims to avoid confusion among regular users while addressing certain business concerns. However, BTRC has not yet issued any formal statement on this matter.
In a Facebook post on Saturday, Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb reassured users that there is no need to panic about illegal phones being blocked, and normal usage can continue.
Originally, NEIR was implemented to curb the use of illegal and smuggled handsets. Technical and business complexities have delayed enforcement, but the system remains operational. While the 90-day grace period is temporary, the longer-term enforcement measures have yet to be clarified.
