Students Study Safety: DTCA Hosts Road Risk Learning Session

The Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA) recently introduced students from leading technology universities to various road safety initiatives aimed at ensuring safer travel across the capital. On Sunday, October 20, a learning session was held at the DTCA office meeting room, bringing together 50 students from 10 universities along with representatives from DTCA and agencies under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, totaling 80 participants.
Ahead of the “National Road Safety Day 2025” on October 22, a workshop titled “A Comprehensive Approach for Road Safety” was inaugurated by DTCA Executive Director (Additional Secretary) Nilima Akhter at the Tejgaon office of DTCA. During the session, she presented a detailed visual overview of the transport infrastructure development plans, ongoing projects, and future initiatives undertaken by DTCA.
As part of its operations, DTCA shared practical insights into the 20-year Strategic Transport Plan (STP), Urban Transport Strategy, traffic circulation certification, integrated transport ticketing system, clearing house, rapid pass scheme, transport demand and traffic management, and coordination of sector-wide infrastructure development. Nilima Akhter highlighted the challenges posed by slow and unregulated traffic on highways, which impede long-distance travel and increase accident risks. She also pointed out that unplanned roadside markets and illegal commercial establishments contribute to congestion, wasting fuel, delaying passengers, disrupting delivery of critical goods, and affecting emergency health services.
In addition, four other presentations were delivered under the moderation of DTCA Training Advisor (Deputy Secretary) Shahed Parvez:
-
“Road Safety and Relevant Laws/Policies” by Senior Road Safety Specialist Mamunur Rahman
-
DTCA Law 2012, Metro Rail Law 2015, BRT Law 2016, and Proposed Rapid Pass Regulations by Mass Transit Engineer Tushar
-
Strategic Transport Planning for Dhaka Metropolitan Area by Additional Executive Director (TMPTI) Mohammad Robiul Alam
-
Road Transport Act 2018 by Traffic Enforcement Officer (Additional DIG, DMP) Selim Khan
Representatives from the Roads and Highways Department, BRTA, BRTC, and DMTCL also attended, along with DTCA Additional Executive Directors Mahbubur Rahman (P&D) and Abdul Latif Khan (MT), and Director (Administration) Mostafizur Rahman.
The session aimed to enhance students’ knowledge and skills on road safety and traffic laws through experience sharing, visual presentations, and interactive discussions. Speakers emphasized the importance of fostering responsible citizenship and ensuring safe, decongested, and efficient traffic flow.
DTCA’s initiative is part of its ongoing efforts to raise awareness of traffic regulations and proper road usage among future citizens, reinforcing the significance of such programs in building a safe and responsible generation of road users in Bangladesh.
