DU Dives into Digital Drive with ‘Amader Lal Bus’ App
Dhaka University (DU) has taken a major step toward modernizing its student transport system with the introduction of the ‘Amader Lal Bus’ live-tracking app, launched under the initiative of the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU). The app, designed to make campus commuting easier and smarter, was officially opened for students on Sunday, 19 October.
During the rollout, DUCSU General Secretary SM Farhad, Student Transport Secretary Asif Abdullah, and Law and Human Rights Secretary Md Zakaria were present alongside students.
Addressing the students, they said that the app can be easily downloaded and used from the website. They requested students to report any complications encountered during use. The officials explained that it took some time to streamline the entire process and that a few technical issues are still being resolved.
They noted that, since fixed trackers on buses did not serve the students’ needs effectively—because students only require tracking information during active trips—the system has been modeled after Uber’s driver-app concept. However, since some drivers currently lack smartphones, alternative solutions are being planned to bring those buses under the app’s coverage.
DUCSU General Secretary SM Farhad said, “The app can now be downloaded from the website, and it will later be available on the Play Store. We request everyone to inform us if they face any errors or difficulties. The app has separate accounts for drivers and students. Through the app, users can see which stop the bus is currently at and estimate how long it will take to reach their own stop.”
Student Transport Secretary Asif Abdullah added, “We are sincerely trying to resolve all issues to ensure a reliable and user-friendly service for the students.”
Earlier, to prepare for the launch, DUCSU’s Student Transport Secretary organized a consultative meeting with the presidents and general secretaries of 17 university bus routes, attended by the newly elected DUCSU Vice President, General Secretary, and Assistant General Secretary.
In the first phase, bus committee members conducted an initial trial of the app. The second phase involved limited participation from students, while in the third phase, bus drivers underwent a two-day hands-on training and live trial to develop familiarity with the app.
Recently, the app was unveiled on the DUCSU website. Initially, it can only be downloaded from there, but it will soon be available on the Play Store. Through this app, students can access real-time information on bus locations and other useful details, enhancing the efficiency and transparency of university transportation.
