CUCSU Candidate Creates Braille Leaflets for Visually Impaired Voters
At the University of Chittagong, a total of 86 visually impaired students are currently enrolled across various departments and institutes. Among them, eight are contesting in the upcoming Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (CUCSU) and hall council elections.
In an inspiring initiative, a hall council candidate has created campaign leaflets in Braille for visually impaired students. Sheikh Sadia Siddika, a student contesting for the Vice President (VP) position at Shamsunnahar Hall, took the unique step to ensure accessibility for all. She is one of three candidates vying for the post.
According to sources, there are four visually impaired female students residing in Shamsunnahar Hall. To reach them, Sadia prepared campaign leaflets featuring her name and ballot number in Braille. As there is no printing press in Chattogram equipped to produce Braille materials, she learned the process by watching YouTube tutorials and produced the leaflets on her own initiative. She has already handed one leaflet to a fellow student, while the remaining three will receive theirs after returning from the Puja holidays.
Speaking about her effort, Sadia said, “Through this initiative, I wanted to send a message to the administration — that it should make proper arrangements for visually impaired students.”
The CUCSU and hall council elections are scheduled for October 15, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. A total of 907 candidates are contesting — 415 for 26 positions in the central students’ union and 486 for hall council seats. The university has 27,521 registered voters, including 16,084 male and 11,329 female students.
