Apple is reportedly exploring the acquisition of U.S.-based artificial intelligence startup Perplexity AI in its bid to develop a cutting-edge AI-powered search engine. The news was first reported by Engadget, citing a Bloomberg report.

According to sources, Adrian Perica, Apple’s Head of Mergers and Acquisitions, has already held internal discussions with top executives regarding the potential deal. While Apple has not yet made a formal offer to Perplexity, multiple meetings have taken place between the two parties, the report noted. As an alternative to acquisition, Apple is also considering a strategic partnership with Perplexity.

The primary objective behind either acquisition or collaboration is to integrate Perplexity’s advanced AI technology into Siri and, eventually, develop an independent AI-powered search engine. If Apple’s current agreement with Google, which powers search results on iOS devices, is terminated due to legal challenges, acquiring Perplexity could provide Apple with a vital contingency plan.

Meanwhile, Apple and Meta are actively competing to recruit top AI talent. Apple has reportedly shown interest in hiring Daniel Gross, founder of Safe Superintelligence Inc., as part of its AI strategy.

This potential acquisition aligns with Apple’s broader efforts to gain greater autonomy in AI infrastructure, signaling its intent to pivot from reliance on third-party platforms and build a more proprietary ecosystem in the evolving landscape of intelligent search.
