Tesla Taxi Timeline Tied Up by Texas Lawmakers

Democratic lawmakers in Texas have urged Tesla to postpone the launch of its much-anticipated robotaxi service in Austin. They are requesting that the rollout be delayed until September, when a new state law governing autonomous vehicles comes into effect, according to a report by Reuters.

In a letter sent Wednesday, the Austin-based legislators stated that this delay is "critical for public safety and building public trust." Tesla CEO Elon Musk had hinted that the service might begin as early as Sunday.

The letter further stated that if Tesla proceeds with a June launch, the company must provide detailed explanations of "how it will comply with the new law."

Currently, autonomous vehicles are permitted in Texas, but the new law will require specific approvals for such services. It will also empower authorities to revoke licenses if necessary and mandate clear protocols for emergency handling.

Musk has announced that the initial fleet will consist of 10 to 20 Model Y vehicles in Austin. However, key details such as who the passengers will be, fare pricing, and coverage areas have not yet been disclosed.
