Multimedia Lab and Complete Digital Library to be Set Up at PIB

Managing Director of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Mahbub Morshed has stated that digital media will empower independent journalism. Additionally, the Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB) is set to launch a multimedia lab within a month to enhance journalists' digital skills and introduce a one-stop service for their protection.

These discussions emerged during the concluding session of a mobile journalism training program for members of the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) on Wednesday. The three-day training program, organized by PIB, was held at its training hall on Circuit House Road in Dhaka from February 10 (Monday), with participation from 35 DRU members.

The workshop on mobile journalism was conducted by Dr. Jamil Khan, Associate Professor at the Department of Journalism, Media, and Communication at Daffodil International University; Shahab Uddin, Executive Producer at Gazi TV and PIB trainer; and Subhasish Das Roy Deep, Executive Editor of FactWatch.

At the closing ceremony, certificates were handed over to the trainees. The event was presided over by PIB Director General Faruk Wasif, with BSS Managing Director Mahbub Morshed attending as the chief guest.

PIB Assistant Trainer Zillhaj Uddin moderated the event, while PIB Director (Additional Charge) of the Study and Training Department, Parveen Sultana Rabby, DRU Information, Technology, and Training Secretary Borhan Uddin, and two trainees also spoke at the program.

During his address, chief guest Mahbub Morshed said, "The mainstream media is now in decline, while Facebook, YouTube, and online platforms are emerging as alternatives. Most readers now consume news through these platforms. The failure of mainstream media to retain readers' trust stems from state and corporate interests. In contrast, online platforms have surged ahead by instantly broadcasting live news with just a mobile phone. This shift has also opened doors for independent journalism. By embracing this opportunity, journalists can achieve financial stability while establishing their professional identity."

Faruk Wasif stated, "Previously, PIB digitally archived content from four media outlets. Now, that number has been increased to six. To support research and reference purposes, we are working on a comprehensive digital archive that will offer future researchers and journalists a clear understanding of historical events. Additionally, within a month, we will establish a multimedia lab where journalists can receive hands-on training and carry out necessary tasks. Efforts are also underway to provide financial assistance for investigative journalism and research. Overall, a one-stop service center for media professionals will be launched at PIB."

Earlier, during the inauguration of the training program on Monday, DRU General Secretary Mainul Hasan Sohel was present as a special guest.

Throughout the three-day session, journalists received hands-on training in mobile journalism, equipping them with the necessary skills to navigate the rapidly evolving digital landscape.

Trainers and speakers emphasized that journalists who wish to sustain their careers in the future must develop strong technological proficiency. They highlighted the distinction between journalists and general mobile users, noting that journalists must verify information before publishing it on social or mainstream media. With modern tools available for fact-checking articles, images, and videos, journalists must ensure accuracy to maintain media credibility.
