Search engine giant Google is stepping into a business model long associated with Apple. The company has officially announced plans to launch its first standalone flagship retail store outside the United States. Named “Google Store Omotesando,” the new outlet is scheduled to open during the summer of 2026 in Tokyo’s upscale and fashionable Omotesando district.

According to Google, the international expansion carries historical significance. When the company established its first overseas office outside the United States in 2001, Japan was also the first country it selected. The new flagship store is intended to reflect that long-standing relationship with the Japanese market.

One-Stop Service and AI Experience

Visitors to the flagship store will be able to explore and purchase Google’s own hardware products as well as devices from partner brands. The location will showcase the company’s popular Pixel smartphones, Nest smart-home products, Fitbit wearable fitness devices, and a wide range of official accessories. Customers will also be able to experience Google’s latest artificial intelligence technologies firsthand and see how the company’s AI-powered services work in real-world scenarios.

Similar to Apple’s renowned Genius Bar concept, the store will feature dedicated technical support staff who can assist customers with device setup, troubleshooting, and on-site Pixel smartphone repairs. In addition, Google plans to host regular educational workshops and hands-on training sessions for technology enthusiasts.

A Brief History of Google Stores

From a retail perspective, the Tokyo location will become Google’s first fully independent and company-operated retail store outside the United States. Previously, the company primarily relied on “shop-in-shop” concepts inside larger retail chains.

For example, Google has operated dedicated “Google Shops” within selected Best Buy locations in Canada, staffed by Google specialists rather than standard sales associates. In 2015, the company also opened a smaller retail presence inside British electronics retailer Currys in London, though that location was later closed.

Microsoft’s Retail Struggles Versus Apple’s Dominance

Google is not the first software giant to experiment with physical retail stores. In 2009, Microsoft launched a global retail expansion alongside the release of Windows 7, opening high-profile stores in cities such as Sydney and London. The company later announced ambitious plans to expand its retail footprint significantly.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic severely impacted Microsoft’s retail strategy, ultimately forcing the closure of nearly all of its stores worldwide. Today, only a limited number of experience and visitor centers remain in operation.

Against the backdrop of Microsoft’s retail setbacks and Apple’s continued dominance in the flagship store market, Google’s new retail initiative will be closely watched by industry observers. Whether the Google Store Omotesando can attract global consumers and establish a successful international retail model will become clearer in the months ahead.
