Internet Inclusion Initiative: Govt Pushes Coordinated Connectivity for All
Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, and Science and Technology Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam has called for coordinated initiatives to ensure “Internet for All.” He made the call on 11 April, Saturday, at an exchange meeting titled “Internet for All” held at the Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commissioner’s conference room. Special guests at the meeting included the Prime Minister’s Adviser Rehan Asif Asad, Secretary of the Posts and Telecommunications Division Abdun Naser Khan, and Cox’s Bazar Superintendent of Police A N M Sajedur Rahman.
In his address as chief guest, Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam said the government is working tirelessly to ensure “Internet for All.” He urged all relevant stakeholders to work in coordination to deliver uninterrupted and affordable internet services to every region of the country.
The minister emphasized that uninterrupted internet connectivity is crucial for ensuring security in coastal and fisheries sectors. He particularly highlighted the importance of launching satellite-based internet services for fishermen working at sea to enable cyclone warnings, prevent piracy, and ensure emergency communications.
He noted that the government is working to expand modern digital services across the country, especially in tourism-dependent areas such as Cox's Bazar. Free Wi-Fi services have already been introduced at airports and railway stations.
Fakir Mahbub Anam further stated that attracting both local and foreign investment is essential to develop Cox’s Bazar into an international-standard tourist city. To this end, the government is working to simplify investment processes, enhance infrastructure facilities, and make related services more accessible. He also urged businesses and local residents associated with the tourism sector to uphold social responsibility, noting that cleanliness, tourist-friendly behavior, and a positive attitude are key to improving Cox’s Bazar’s image.
The minister added that the government aims to deliver technology to people’s doorsteps. Initiatives are being implemented to expand internet access up to the upazila level and to develop skills in freelancing and artificial intelligence (AI).
The Prime Minister’s Adviser said the government is working to improve the quality of telecommunications services nationwide. Measures have been taken to quickly resolve existing issues, including delays in services provided by Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited.
Rehan Asif Asad also stated that efforts will continue to expand free Wi-Fi and improve mobile network services in Cox’s Bazar. Service quality will be enhanced gradually through phased investments and planning.
The meeting was chaired by Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Md. A. Mannan. Representatives from civil society, various stakeholders, media personnel, and officials from different departments and agencies shared their views.
Following the meeting, the minister and the adviser held another exchange session at the Cox’s Bazar Hilldown Circuit House conference room with officials from BTCL, Teletalk, the Submarine Cable Company, and Bangladesh Satellite Company, as well as employees of the Postal Department.
Secretary of the Posts and Telecommunications Division Abdun Naser Khan and Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commissioner Md. A. Mannan were also present at the meeting.
