Solar Smart Campus:
DIU Signs 3.4MW OPEX Solar PPA with Paramount Group
To expand the use of renewable energy and build a sustainable campus, Daffodil International University and Paramount Group have signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to implement a solar power project titled the “3.4 MW OPEX Solar Project.” Through this initiative, environmentally friendly energy will be generated by utilizing the rooftops of university buildings and halls, marking a significant advancement in green energy adoption. The project is expected to be implemented within the next four months.
The PPA signing ceremony was held on Monday, 6 April, at the Daffodil International University campus in Daffodil Smart City, Ashulia, Savar. Present at the event were Paramount Group Chairman Sakhawat Hossain; Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Daffodil International University Dr. Md. Sabur Khan; Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. M. R. Kabir; Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Mohammad Masum Iqbal; Treasurer Dr. Hamidul Haque Khan; Paramount Group Director (Finance) Zahidul Abedeen; and Company Secretary Rabiul Islam. The agreement was signed by Registrar Dr. Mohammad Nadir Bin Ali on behalf of Daffodil International University and Managing Director Sadab Hossain on behalf of Paramount Group. Deans, department heads, and senior officials from both institutions were also present.
The project, being implemented under the leadership of Professor Dr. M. Sachul Alam, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Daffodil International University, and guided by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, stands as a model of effective and sustainable partnership between the two institutions.
Under the OPEX model, the university will be able to utilize solar power without any initial investment. With the electricity tariff set at Tk 7 per unit, the project is expected to significantly reduce electricity costs and ensure long-term cost stability.
The initiative is projected to reduce approximately 3,500 to 4,000 tons of carbon emissions annually, equivalent to planting around 60,000 trees. Moreover, as it requires no water usage and produces no harmful gas emissions, it is considered a fully environmentally friendly initiative. Through net metering facilities, excess electricity generated can be supplied to the national grid in exchange for credits, further reducing electricity expenses. At the same time, the project will contribute to saving foreign currency by reducing dependence on imported fuels.
The initiative will also make a significant contribution to education and research. It will serve as a practical learning platform for students, enabling them to gain hands-on experience in renewable energy technologies.
According to the university authorities, this is the largest initiative among both public and private universities and the first of its kind undertaken by a private university. It is not merely an agreement but a significant step toward building a sustainable, environmentally friendly, and self-reliant future.
