Measles-Rubella Response: AI-Era Health Drive Targets Child Vaccination Push
Health Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain has stated that nearly 82 percent of those diagnosed with measles-rubella in the country are children aged between six months and under five years. To combat the situation, an emergency vaccination campaign will begin from Sunday.
He disclosed this information at a press conference held on Saturday, April 4, at the conference room of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare at the Secretariat.
The Health Minister said that the incidence of measles has increased in certain areas of the country, which is particularly affecting young children. Therefore, all children aged 6 months to 59 months will be brought under the vaccination coverage—whether they have previously received the vaccine or not.
He informed that the vaccination program will be implemented in phases. In the first phase, it will begin in 30 high-risk areas and later be expanded nationwide. The target has been set to complete the program by May 21, before the holy Eid-ul-Azha.
The minister assured that the vaccines being used are safe and effective. He said that if administered on time, measles can be controlled as a preventable disease.
He urged parents to bring their children to designated centers to ensure vaccination and to follow accurate information instead of rumors. He also called on the mass media and local leadership to assist in raising awareness.
The Health Minister further stated that children suffering from fever or illness should receive the vaccine after recovery. In addition, children infected with or suspected of having measles will be given Vitamin ‘A’ capsules, which help reduce complications.
State Minister for Health Dr. Md. A. Muhit, along with relevant officials, was also present at the press conference.
