AI Chip Shift: DeepSeek Prepares V4 Model on Huawei Hardware

China’s artificial intelligence (AI) research firm DeepSeek is preparing to run its next-generation model ‘V4’ on Huawei’s latest chip. The information was reported by news agency Reuters, citing the US-based online media outlet The Information.

According to the report, as part of preparations to launch the V4 model, major Chinese technology giants have placed large-scale orders for Huawei’s new chip. Alibaba Group, ByteDance, and Tencent Holdings have collectively ordered several hundred thousand units. The V4 model could be launched within the next few weeks.

Due to US export restrictions, access to advanced chips from companies like Nvidia has become increasingly difficult, prompting Chinese firms to strengthen their reliance on domestic technologies.

Over the past few months, DeepSeek has worked directly with Huawei and another Chinese chipmaker, Cambricon Technologies, to rewrite and test the code for the V4 model. Two additional variants of the model are also being developed, optimized specifically for Chinese chips.

DeepSeek’s previous models, V3 and R1, created a significant impact in the global market last year by delivering strong performance at relatively low cost. The V4 model will be the successor to those versions.

It is worth noting that a lightweight version, ‘V4 Lite,’ has recently been released with 2 trillion parameters and a 1 million token context window, which is being considered a preparatory version for the full V4 model.
