E-VAT Engine: NBR Integrates Real-Time Sales Data with Automated Risk Analytics
Sales data from business establishments’ Electronic Fiscal Devices (EFD), POS machines, or software is now being transmitted directly to the National Board of Revenue (NBR) server. This is being integrated with VAT return data submitted online and import data from the ASYCUDA system. As a result, all information related to sales, purchases, input VAT, and output VAT can now be reconciled and reviewed on a single platform.
Through this digital integration, the system can instantly detect any discrepancies. Using software algorithms, high-risk taxpayers are being identified—such as those showing sudden drops in sales, claiming abnormal input VAT, or demonstrating significant deviations compared to previous records. Entities flagged as high-risk are being prioritized for audit.
The NBR has introduced a special “Automated Risk Management Module” within the e-VAT system. This module is based on 20 specific risk indicators, through which an entity’s data is analyzed to automatically determine its risk level. Under this system, the selection of entities for audit is conducted automatically, thereby reducing the scope for individual influence by officials.
In the first phase of this automated system, 600 entities have been brought under audit. These include 405 manufacturing entities, 98 service providers, 65 retail and wholesale traders, and 32 entities in the importer and exporter category.
According to the NBR, this transparent and technology-driven initiative will usher in a new era in VAT management. Following audits, if any entity is found to have concealed information or discrepancies, strict legal action will be taken against them.
The authority also stated that the effectiveness of this system will be continuously monitored, and the risk indicators will be further strengthened in the future. As part of efforts to modernize, enhance transparency, and improve efficiency in customs and VAT administration, “trade facilitation” initiatives are also being reinforced.
The NBR expects that this automated system will reduce harassment of taxpayers while simultaneously strengthening efforts to prevent revenue evasion. Such automation initiatives will continue in the future to make the VAT administration more taxpayer-friendly and fully digital.
