Energy Efficiency Initiative: JUST Launches Power-Saving Monitoring Program
In line with government directives, the program was inaugurated under the initiative of the Electricity and Energy Conservation Monitoring Committee formed by the university’s Regent Board. On Wednesday, 1 April, the program was formally launched through the handover of a leaflet to Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Majid by Treasurer and Committee Convener Professor Dr. Hossain Al Mamun. Subsequently, committee members visited various offices in the administrative building to distribute awareness leaflets, and it was announced that the initiative would be gradually extended to all departments and residential halls.
The leaflet outlines various guidelines for electricity and energy conservation. It states that during daytime, when sufficient natural light is available, electric lighting should be turned off and windows and doors should be kept open. It also emphasizes avoiding the use of excessive lighting.
During office hours, particular importance has been placed on switching off unnecessary fans, air conditioners, and other electrical equipment. The use of air conditioners has been discouraged unless absolutely necessary, and even when used, the temperature is advised to be set at 25 degrees Celsius or higher.
Additionally, instructions have been provided to ensure that all electrical devices are switched off when leaving rooms and after office hours. The leaflet also highlights the need to avoid unnecessary lighting in corridors, staircases, and washrooms, to ensure the use of energy-efficient devices, and to refrain from excessive decorative lighting. The use of galleries for events organized by different departments has been discouraged; however, if necessary, limited electricity usage has been advised.
Authorities expressed hope that such awareness-driven initiatives would play an effective role in reducing electricity and energy consumption across the university.
