PM Tarique Rahman Pushes for Modern, Locally Built Waste Management Solutions with the Help of BUET
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed authorities to use modern equipment for waste removal and advised experts to explore the feasibility of developing necessary machinery domestically in collaboration with Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), instead of relying on imports.
The directives were issued on Tuesday (17 March) during a meeting at the Secretariat on waste management and transportation, attended by BUET experts and the administrators of the two city corporations of Dhaka.
Following the meeting, Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Abdus Salam said that, for the first time, the Prime Minister had provided Eid bonuses from his personal fund to workers involved in waste management. He added that the Prime Minister had instructed and advised exploring whether the required equipment for waste management could be produced locally with BUET’s support instead of being imported. He also noted that the city corporation has not yet received a block allocation and is working to increase revenue.
Professor Dr. Md. Ehsan of BUET’s Department of Mechanical Engineering said the Prime Minister emphasized the use of electronic three-wheelers to improve automation and transportation in waste management. He added that the Prime Minister encouraged local production of transport equipment rather than imports.
Meanwhile, Dhaka North City Corporation Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan Milton said that efforts to improve roads and waste management will continue in a coordinated manner. He added that various initiatives have been taken for mosquito control, noting that medication alone would not suffice. “We are cleaning canals, and we hope mosquito populations will be largely under control before the monsoon,” he said.
