NBR Introduces Email-Based Registration to Resolve OTP Hassle for Expatriates

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has introduced a special registration system through email for expatriates to resolve problems related to OTP. The information was disclosed in a press release issued by the NBR on Tuesday, February 24.

The same press release stated that nearly 3.9 million taxpayers have submitted e-returns so far in the current fiscal year.

According to the statement, as the online e-return submission process has become easier, nearly 3.9 million income tax returns have been submitted online so far in the 2025–26 tax year. All individual taxpayers are required to submit their income tax returns for the 2025–26 tax year online by February 28, 2025.

Regarding the introduction of a special registration facility to facilitate e-return submission for Bangladeshi taxpayers residing abroad, the NBR said that under this system, instead of sending the OTP (One-Time Password) to a mobile phone, it will be sent to the taxpayer’s own email address, enabling completion of password reset and registration processes.

In addition, for those taxpayers who registered in the e-return system using a mobile number registered through the biometric method but are currently staying abroad and unable to use mobile OTP, an email verification system has recently been introduced.

As a result, expatriate individual taxpayers will now be able to complete email registration online to submit their income statements or returns. Through this system, expatriates will be able to carry out all return-related activities via email, including the option to change their password.

It is worth mentioning that submission of income tax returns requires a mobile number registered through the biometric method; OTPs for return submission and password changes are sent to that registered number. Many expatriates had been facing difficulties as their registered numbers remained inactive abroad, making it impossible to submit returns online. To resolve this issue, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) has introduced a special registration system enabling the entire process to be completed through email.
