As Ramadan unfolds, social media has been buzzing with posts about which mosques will serve biriyani or tehari at iftar. Riding that wave of curiosity, a new app called ‘Biriyani Dibe’ has gone viral, offering real-time updates on mosques serving biriyani during iftar.

The app allows users to see instantly which mosque is offering biriyani, along with the total number of confirmations for each post. Much like social media platforms, it features a like and dislike option to help gauge the reliability of posts. Each listing also includes the mosque’s Google location, making it easier for users to find their way.

The social web app has been developed by Abdullah Al Jubayer Prince, a university student studying Computer Science and Engineering at the International University of Business Agriculture and Technology (IUBAT) in the capital.

The platform operates on a crowdsourcing model, where users contribute updates about iftar arrangements. Upon entering the web app, visitors are greeted with a request for donations to help cover server expenses.

Speaking to Digibanglatechnews, Prince said the platform came under a DDoS attack at 3am recently, causing his personally managed 100GB-capacity local server to hang. “I am currently struggling to manage bot attacks. To keep the service running throughout Ramadan, I will need around 2TB of server space. That’s why I am seeking support,” he explained.

When asked how the app verifies information, the young developer said that posts are not marked as reliable unless they receive at least 200 upvotes.

Explaining his motivation behind the initiative, Prince said that while people enjoy biriyani or tehari at home or in restaurants year-round, there is a special excitement around mosque-served biriyani during Ramadan. “Every year, social media is filled with funny posts and memes about it. That idea inspired me to build this app,” he added.

Since the second day of Ramadan, links to the app have flooded social media, accompanied by humorous comments and reactions. The platform allows users to add live locations through both the website and app. Anyone can visit and potentially find an opportunity to enjoy biriyani at iftar. If a local mosque is serving biriyani or tehari, users can update the information directly on the ‘Biriyani Dibe’ app, enabling others to see where the meal is being offered that day.
