Bangladesh Bank has issued a warning against the use of misleading videos, images, and “sample notes” resembling real currency circulating on social media platforms. The central bank said such activities are contributing to the spread of counterfeit notes and putting the overall currency management system at risk.

In a press release sent Monday morning, February 16, Bangladesh Bank said that recently various platforms including Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram have seen the use of “sample notes” that closely resemble the design and size of genuine currency notes—or in some cases are even larger in size—for marketing and content creation purposes.

Additionally, incidents have been observed where paper similar to real banknotes is being used in commercial promotions, further raising concerns.

Bangladesh Bank stated that producing, using, or promoting paper resembling genuine currency notes is a punishable offense under the law. According to Section 489 (6) of the Bangladesh Penal Code, 1860, legal action will be taken against any individual or institution found involved in such activities.

The central bank also warned that spreading false or rumor-based information through digital platforms constitutes a punishable offense under Section 25 of the Cyber Security Act, 2023.
