Mild Morning Tremor Jolts Region as 5.2-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Assam

A mild earthquake was felt in different parts of the country early Monday morning. The 5.2-magnitude tremor struck at 4:47 am on January 5, according to seismic monitoring agencies.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located about three kilometers west of Dhing town in India’s Assam state and around 76 kilometers northeast of the state capital, Guwahati. Besides Bangladesh, the tremor was also felt in parts of India, Myanmar, Bhutan, and China.

Data from the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) and other international monitoring agencies indicate that the earthquake originated at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers beneath the Dhing area of Assam. The epicenter was located at latitude 26.470° north and longitude 92.438° east.

Earlier, on the night of December 10 last year, two earthquakes were reported in Sylhet within a span of just five minutes, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre. The first tremor occurred at 2:20:31 am, followed by a second at 2:25:14 am.

Both earthquakes originated in the Bangladesh–India border region near Beanibazar in Zakiganj upazila of Sylhet.
