NIKDU Records 44 Successful Kidney Transplants, Expands Surgical and Outpatient Care
The National Institute of Kidney Diseases and Urology (NIKDU) has successfully completed nearly five kidney transplants over the past month, bringing the total number of successful transplants at the institute to 44. The hospital is currently providing surgical treatment simultaneously in six operating theatres, while its outpatient department serves around 1,500 patients daily.
The information was disclosed on Monday at the NIKDU auditorium during the unveiling ceremony of the Teachers’ Association journal and constitution. At the event, 20 doctors who recently obtained higher degrees and 42 doctors who received promotions were formally felicitated. The reception was extended to postgraduate doctors who passed in the January–July 2025 session, as well as to those promoted to the ranks of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor.
At the beginning of the program, tribute was paid to the martyrs of the Great War of Independence, and prayers were offered for the departed souls of Sharif Osman Hadi, martyred in the anti-Indian hegemony movement, and the martyrs of the July mass uprising.
The event was chaired by Teachers’ Association President Associate Professor Dr. Mashiur Arefin Rubel, with General Secretary Dr. Shahriar Md. Kabir Hasan (Pallab) conducting the proceedings.
Speakers at the event included NIKDU Director Professor Dr. Syed Alfaz Sani; Teachers’ Association Treasurer Associate Professor Dr. Shahnewaz Dewan; Head of the Urology Department Professor Dr. Md. Shawkat Alam; Nephrology Department Professor Dr. A. N. M. Ehsanul Karim; Head of the Transplant Urology Department Professor Dr. Fazal Naser; Pediatric Urology Professor Dr. Faisal Islam; Head of the Pediatric Nephrology Department Associate Professor Dr. Md. Kabir Alam; Head of the Anesthesia Department Professor Dr. Md. Tanvir Alam; Head of the Radiology Department Associate Professor Dr. Tahmina Islam; and Head of the Microbiology Department Professor Dr. Morshed Alam.
The speakers noted that since the establishment of NIKDU, there had previously been no dedicated platform for teachers, which has now been created. They expressed optimism that faculty members would work closely with the administration to help move the institution forward.
NIKDU Director Professor Dr. Syed Alfaz Sani said the institute is steadily progressing. “The old NIKDU is no more; NIKDU is now moving ahead. It will become a unique kidney-related institution in Bangladesh,” he said, adding that patient numbers, surgical procedures, and service quality have all increased. He expressed confidence that NIKDU would serve as a guiding institution in the future.
Teachers’ Association President Dr. Mashiur Arefin Rubel said efforts would continue to develop NIKDU into an international-standard medical center. With collective effort, he added, the institute could soon be transformed into a Center of Excellence.
