Shahriar Naim and Mizbah Uddin Elected MRU President and Secretary for 2026

Shahriar Naim, Multimedia Chief Reporter of the daily Jai Jai Din, has been elected President of the Multimedia Reporters Unity (MRU) for 2026, securing 159 votes, while Daily Niropekkho correspondent Mizbah Uddin was elected General Secretary with 135 votes.

The election saw competition among 41 candidates for 21 executive posts. Four candidates were elected unopposed: Joint General Secretary Jahirul Islam Ratul of Banglanews24.com; Sports Editor Sainul Nur of Protidiner Bangladesh; Finance Editor Jannatur Rahman of Daily Janabani; and Cultural Editor Arafat Hossain Himel.

Voting was held throughout the day on Monday, December 22, at the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU). Following the conclusion of polling, the results were announced by the Chief Election Commissioner and DRU General Secretary Mainul Hasan Sohel.

In closely contested races with three candidates each, Daily Kaler Kantho’s Mostafizur Rahman Milon was elected Organizing Secretary, while Citizen TV’s Syed Mahbub won the post of Information Technology and Training Editor.

Among other elected office-bearers, Islam Uddin Talukdar of Swadhin Sangbad and Zakir Islam of My TV were elected Vice Presidents; Mohammad Khoka of Desh Rupantor became Co-Organizing Secretary; Yasin Arafat of Asia Bani was elected Office Secretary; Ismail Hossain of Shomoyer Chitra won the post of Publicity Secretary; and Green TV’s Yasin Arafat was elected Literature and Publication Editor.

Asia Bani’s Arafat Hossain Himel was also elected Cultural Editor through voting. Bijoy Ahmed of Matri Bhumi’r Khobor was elected Social Welfare Editor, while Solaiman Suman of Daily Destiny won the post of Health, Environment and Hospitality Editor.

The five newly elected Executive Members are Ismail Sorkar of My TV, Shahin Alam Joy of Daily Niropekkho, Swadhin Rana of Protidiner Bangladesh, Abul Khayer of Asian TV, and Al Amin Khan of Sangbad Probaho.

Speaking after the election at the Sagar-Runi Hall of the DRU building, DRU General Secretary Mainul Hasan Sohel wished the newly elected committee continued success. He noted that journalism is currently facing threats from various quarters and stressed that maintaining professional integrity and dignity is essential for survival in the days ahead.

“Whether online, digital, or multimedia, we must not allow ourselves to fall into professional bankruptcy. We must not let journalism be tainted,” he said.

DRU Office Secretary MM Jasim was also present at the event.
