Chrome Curbs Clutter: Google to Auto-Block Irrelevant Notifications

Google’s web browser, Chrome, is introducing a new feature that will automatically disable unnecessary website notifications. If a user does not visit or interact with a particular website for a long time, Chrome will automatically revoke that site’s notification permission, according to a report by Engadget.

The new feature will function similarly to Chrome’s existing Safety Check system, which could previously take automatic action regarding camera and location permissions. Google plans to gradually roll out this feature across both Android and desktop versions of Chrome.

The report further notes that when notifications from a site are blocked, Chrome will notify the user accordingly. Users can later manually re-enable the permission or adjust the settings through Safety Check.

According to Google, only about 1 percent of notifications sent through Chrome currently receive any form of user interaction. The company’s internal testing revealed that reducing the overall number of notifications helps users pay greater attention to the ones they do receive.
