Coursera to Acquire Udemy in Major Online Learning Merger
Coursera has announced a major consolidation in the online education sector, revealing plans to acquire its rival Udemy through an all-share transaction. The deal would create a combined entity with an estimated market valuation of around $25 billion, according to Reuters.
Under the terms of the agreement, Udemy shareholders will receive 0.8 shares of Coursera for each Udemy share they hold. The transaction is expected to be completed in the second half of next year, subject to regulatory and shareholder approvals.
The proposed merger comes amid growing consolidation pressure in the online learning industry, as consumer interest in online courses has declined following the surge experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Both Coursera and Udemy believe the combined platform will strengthen their position in the corporate training market, where demand for upskilling is rising—particularly in artificial intelligence, data science, and software development.
Coursera, known for its partnerships with universities and institution-led certification programs, and Udemy, which operates a marketplace driven by independent instructors, are pursuing this merger at a time of heightened investor caution. Analysts suggest that AI-driven skills development is likely to become the central strategic focus of the newly merged company.
