The Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) organized a workshop for members of the Capital Market Journalists Forum (CMJF) on “Forensic Analysis of Financial Statements” at the Rangamati Island Resort in Rangamati, Chattogram.

Speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration on Friday morning, September 26, BSEC Chairman Khandaker Rashed Maksud described journalists as the “mirror of the market” and emphasized that accurate, impartial, and analytical reporting is indispensable for making the country’s capital market sustainable and investment-friendly.

He noted, “Such reporting enhances investors’ confidence in the market and makes their decision-making easier.”

Highlighting the broader importance of the subject, he added, “Forensic analysis of financial statements is not only crucial for journalists, but also for investors, regulators, and the general public. The true financial condition of a company or potential irregularities cannot always be identified at first glance.”

Reaffirming BSEC’s commitment to capacity-building for financial journalists, he said, “BSEC has always supported, and will continue to support, the enhancement of journalists’ skills and professional standards. Not only have we included CMJF in journalism awards, but also in fellowship programs. Although some may object, our sole purpose is to work closely with journalists in the long run so they can achieve higher standards. Ultimately, investors will also benefit.”

Commending the workshop initiative, the BSEC Chairman remarked, “No capital market can be sustainable without transparency, accountability, and an information-based system.”

He further told journalists, “Impartial journalism is not just about publishing information; it is a social responsibility. Spreading unverified information or rumors can create instability in the market. Therefore, every report must be balanced and research-oriented.”

The program was presided over by CMJF President Golam Samdani Bhuiyan and conducted by its General Secretary Abu Ali. Expo Group Managing Director Asad Chowdhury delivered the welcome speech. The workshop was facilitated by Mohammad Selim Kabir, Vice President and Chapter Director of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) Bangladesh Chapter, along with CFE Arif Mahmud.
