New VC of JUST Yearul Kabir joins

Professor Dr. Yearul Kabir has joined Jessore University of Science and Technology (JUST) as its fifth vice-chancellor. He previously served as a professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Dhaka University. He signed the acceptance letter at his office in the university on Wednesday morning, April 17th.

Prior to this, the Ministry of Education announced his appointment in a notification signed by Md. Shah Alam Siraj, Assistant Secretary.

Before officially joining at 9 am, the new Vice-Chancellor paid his respects by laying a floral wreath at the foundation stone of the university, which bears the name of the late former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, and offered prayers for the salvation of her soul. Subsequently, he placed floral wreaths at the central Shaheed Minar (Martyr's Monument) of the university in memory of all the heroic martyrs from 1952 to 2024. Following the joining formalities, he planted a neem sapling, mirroring the 'Zia Tree' program of former President Shaheed Ziaur Rahman. He then held separate exchange meetings with the Deans of various faculties, Departmental Chairpersons, Heads of Offices, and successively with teachers, officers, and employees.

In the exchange meeting, Professor Dr. Yearul Kabir, seeking everyone's cooperation to advance JUST, stated that JUST is already advanced in education and research, and our research and academic work must be further accelerated. The knowledge created through research must be disseminated to our nation. We must contribute to research in line with the world. Students must pay attention to co-curricular activities alongside earning degrees. He mentioned in his speech that he wants to create a fair, humane, and cooperative environment with everyone. Teachers, officers, and employees of various levels of the university were present at the exchange meeting.

Professor Dr. Yearul Kabir obtained his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Dhaka. He later received his Ph.D. from Tohoku University, Japan. From 1984 to 2023, he taught at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Dhaka. In addition, he also served as an associate professor at Kuwait University and as a part-time teacher in the Department of Chemistry at Jahangirnagar University. This renowned scientist has worked as a postdoctoral researcher and visiting scientist in various countries, including Japan and Germany. He has published more than 140 research articles and 23 book chapters in various internationally renowned research journals. He is a respected fellow of the World Academy of Sciences and the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences. He was born on January 8, 1958, in Kishoreganj District, Bangladesh.
