Securing Society: Seminar on Cyber Safety at SUST

A seminar on “Concept of Cybersecurity in Personal Life and Ways to Counter Threats” was held at the Social Science Building of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) on Tuesday, August 19.
The seminar provided detailed insights into cybersecurity, emphasizing its necessity in daily life, methods of usage, and strategies for safeguarding personal social media accounts. It demonstrated how hackers exploit the unrestricted use of information and negligence to put individuals’ personal lives at risk. Participants also learned techniques for identifying secure websites while making online payments.
In addition, real-life examples were presented of how artificial intelligence is misused to create deepfake images and videos of women to socially harass them. The session also discussed the safe use of technology and legal measures available to address such issues.
Speaking at the seminar, Professor Dr. Tahmina Islam said, “Cybersecurity is an extremely crucial issue in today’s digital era. Our personal information, financial transactions, confidential government documents, and vital institutional data are constantly at risk of cyberattacks. Cybersecurity protects this data. Moreover, cyber awareness prevents financial losses, preserves personal privacy, and ensures national security. With the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence and technology, threats are also increasing constantly. Therefore, cybersecurity is indispensable for building a safe and trustworthy digital society.”
The event was presided over by Md. Mofazzal Haque, President of Bashundhara Shuboshongho SUST Unit, and conducted by General Secretary Jannatul Ferdousi Sonali. Professor Dr. Tahmina Islam of the Department of Social Work at SUST attended the seminar as a guest speaker.
