July Uprising Commemoration Kicks Off with QR Code Linked Calendar Launch
The month-long commemorative events marking the anniversary of the July Uprising were officially inaugurated with the unveiling of a QR code-linked digital calendar by Chief Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus on Tuesday, July 1. The unveiling took place at the Chief Advisor’s Office in the presence of Cultural Advisor Mostofa Sarwar Farooki, Education Advisor C. R. Abrar, and Vice Chancellor of the National University Professor Dr. A. S. M. Amanullah.
Scanning the QR code reveals a 36-day digital calendar titled "July Memory Commemoration Programs". Each date marked with a red dot leads users to specific event details when clicked. Initial viewing shows that no programs are scheduled on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 9th, 11th, 12th, and 13th of the month. A note in the app indicates that a photo and video upload feature will be added soon.
During the opening ceremony, a four-minute documentary tribute to the July Uprising was screened. The Chief Advisor also handed over scholarship cheques to three students from the National University.
In his keynote speech, Dr. Yunus stated, “What we are initiating today is not merely a remembrance, but a new pledge. In last year’s July, we witnessed unprecedented unity across classes, professions, and generations in this country. This July, we wish to fortify that unity.”
He further added, “The core objective of this initiative is to raise awareness among the people about their democratic rights, to demand political accountability, and to ensure that the opportunity for reform—earned through bloodshed—is not lost.”
Referring to the month-long observance as the "July Uprising Revival Program", Dr. Yunus said, “Through this series of events across July and August, we are symbolically reviving a historic day from last year. We are renewing our commitment to the cause for which students, civilians, rickshaw-pullers, workers, and youths sacrificed their lives or were injured. This will be an annual event to ensure that no tyranny ever rises again.”
He reiterated, “This month-long program is not just about remembrance; it is a renewed pledge. The unity we saw last July among all strata of the nation—we want to strengthen that again. This is about raising awareness of democratic rights, demanding accountability, and not letting go of the reform achieved through blood.”
“The road ahead may be difficult, but the possibilities are vast. History has shown that when the people rise, no force can suppress them,” he said. “Let us turn this month of July into a month of mass awakening and unity.”
Dr. Yunus concluded, “The July commemoration is not merely a sentimental journey, nor a platform for outrage. Rather, the fulfillment of a 16-year-old declaration of defiance was driven by a grand vision—a new statecraft, a reimagined Bangladesh.”
