CCTV Controversy Clouds Secretariat Scuffle
Mojahidul Islam Selim, Secretary General of the 'Nurul-Mojahid' faction of the Secretariat Officers-Employees United Council, has claimed that all CCTV cameras in Building No. 4 of the Secretariat were turned off on the evening of July 24. On June 29 (Sunday), posters protesting an alleged assault on fellow staff members were put up across various buildings of the Secretariat.
Following the poster campaign, Selim led a group of 20–25 employees in a protest march where they chanted slogans against Badiul Kabir, the president of the rival faction of the council, and demanded justice for the alleged attackers.
Speaking through a handheld microphone during the protest, Selim stated, “When I filed a complaint with Shahbagh Police Station, the investigation officer (IO) told me that all CCTV cameras in Building No. 4 were switched off from evening until 7 a.m. the next morning. Who gave this order?” He demanded an explanation for the camera outage and accountability from those responsible.
He further alleged that Nurul Islam and other top council leaders were suddenly attacked that evening and that Nurul remains hospitalized due to his injuries. “The attackers must be identified through CCTV footage and brought to justice,” he said.
Issuing a stern warning, Selim declared, “The Secretariat is not a place for thuggery. With 18,000 employees behind us, we will resist. Whether today or tomorrow—justice will be served from here.”
Selim also accused, “Some ghosts of the government infiltrated our ranks. Now they are sitting silently at home in exchange for money. But we will not remain silent.”
The faction led by Selim has announced a press conference to be held on June 30 (Monday) at 3 p.m. at the National Press Club to provide further details.
The conflict reportedly began on the night of June 24 over the operation of the Secretariat canteen, leading to a violent altercation between the groups led by Nurul Islam and Badiul Kabir. Since the incident, the canteen and shops under the Secretariat Multipurpose Cooperative Society have remained closed.
The Nurul Islam group has alleged that the attack was led by Badiul Kabir himself, assisted by Cooperative Society President Mohammad Moinul Islam and Vice President Abdus Salam. Posters bearing these accusations have also been distributed within the Secretariat.
