Nutrition Nexus: National Conference at JUST Explores Emerging Dietary Trends

The Department of Nutrition and Food Technology (NFT) at Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST) hosted its first national conference titled “Emerging Nutritional Trends and Their Impacts on Health” on Sunday, 22 June, at the university’s central gallery. The event focused on personalised nutrition planning, the influence of gut microbiota, global health challenges, novel product development, and plant-based sustainable diets.
Faculty members and students from several universities attended the sessions. Special guest Professor Dr Hossain-Al-Mamun, Treasurer of JUST, urged participants to prioritise public health. “We must become health-conscious citizens; otherwise, building a healthy nation will be impossible. The rising trend of food adulteration in Bangladesh threatens our future generations,” he warned.
Addressing the NFT students, he added: “The NFT discipline is in high demand worldwide, both in higher education and in employment markets. Alongside traditional jobs, graduates have ample opportunities to become entrepreneurs. By honing your skills and broadening your perspectives, you can propel the nation forward.”
Invited speakers included Professor Dr A. K. Obaidul Huq of Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University, Professor Dr Md Ruhul Amin of the University of Dhaka, and Professor Dr S. M. Abdur Rauf of Islamic University. Through slide presentations, they highlighted research findings on global health challenges, product innovation, and sustainable plant-based diets.
After the morning plenary, an oral presentation session began at 12:30 p.m., followed by a poster session at 2:00 p.m. Certificates were distributed and poster competition winners were honoured at 4:00 p.m.
Conference Convener and NFT Department Chair Professor Dr Md Shirin Nigar, along with Member Secretary and Associate Professor Dr Md Omar Faruque, delivered remarks. Other faculty in attendance included Associate Professors Dr Rashida Parvin and Dr Md Shimul Islam, and Assistant Professors Tanvir Ahmed, Dr Md Alau Uddin, and Fatema-tuz-Zohra. The programme was conducted by department representatives Nishat Ahmed and Habiba Rahman.
