Windows users utilizing Microsoft’s parental control feature, Family Safety, have reported an unusual issue: Google Chrome abruptly shuts down upon launching. The glitch was first flagged on Reddit on June 3, with users stating that Chrome closes instantly without any error message. The news has been reported by Engadget.

Google has confirmed that the issue occurs specifically when Family Safety is enabled. However, despite the problem persisting for over 17 days, Microsoft has yet to offer a public statement or release a fix.

Currently, there are only two workarounds. One involves disabling the “Filter inappropriate websites” setting within Family Safety, though this potentially compromises protection for younger users. The other temporary solution is to rename the chrome.exe file within its installation folder to chrome1.exe, which allows the browser to run.

This incident comes amid ongoing criticism of Microsoft for allegedly coercing users into adopting its Edge browser. While some regulatory relaxation has occurred in Europe due to EU rules, concerns over competition and platform neutrality continue to surface.
